I feel like everyone in some way, shape, or form has heard about how gratitude increases not only our positivity but also our productivity in our lives. Gratitude helps us to see the good in each day, in each moment, and energizes us to keep moving forward. It empowers us to help others as we feel gratitude for the help we have received. It humbles us to recognize we can’t do this life alone, as we are grateful for those God has placed in our lives.

I am beyond confident that my daily gratitude practices have changed my life. I’ve been expressing my gratitude in some way, shape, or form pretty consistently over the past few years, and while yes, I am wired to be naturally positive, it has helped me cultivate not only more happiness, but more joy in my life than I believe I would ever experience without it.

Gratitude turns what we have into enough.

A lot of people message me about my monthly gratitude calendars, so I’ve been feeling led to share more about them here. I have this big, beautifully simple wall calendar that hangs in my room and each night before I go to sleep, I write something that I am grateful for on that particular day. I try and be specific, especially on the days that don’t have a lot of “obvious” reasons to be grateful. It’s a small way to exercise a little creativity as I try and design each day’s piece of gratitude a little differently than the day before. A few things about specifically documenting my gratitude on this big wall calendar:

  1. It allows me to see all the potential for gratitude ahead of me at the start of the month and it allows me to feel full of gratitude for my experiences as the month finishes. All the empty space at the start of the month energizes me for the possibilities that lie ahead.
  2. All can see it since it’s on the wall, so it holds me accountable to doing it each day and making it look pretty…or at least decent!
  3. I have the vantage point of being able to look at it while I am lying in bed, so, oftentimes, I feel all warm and fuzzy inside as I fall asleep reflecting on what gratitude the day brought.

Like I said, a lot of folks seem drawn to this idea and it really is very simple. Take pride in your gratitude practice by hanging it up like a prized possession. Here are a few shots of my calendar over the past year:

Practicing gratitude helps me greatly in my prayer life, too, as I can take what I’ve written down for the day and turn upward, in turn also thanking God for providing me whatever it is He has given me that day. Saying thank you in prayer to the Creator who ultimately has given me all these good things, humbles me to remember where the praise should lie and how I always have the breath in my lungs to be thankful for.

So I’m feeling led to end this entry with a little gratitude mantra, words that keep me grounded and keep me thankful despite what each day brings. I hope by sharing this with you today, you might feel led to pause and practice gratitude in your day-to-day.

I am thankful for who I am and the life I lead.

I am thankful for the hard parts of today, as there is always something to be learned.

I am thankful for the people, places, and spaces I impacted today and how they, in turn, impacted me.

I am thankful for my Father’s never-ending love and never-changing grace no matter what today brought and no matter what tomorrow brings.
