I’ll be the first to admit it – I have a lot of fears. Fears of what others think of me, fears of not measuring up to my own standards I place on myself, and fears of failing. That last one has been a big one I’ve faced recently – fear of failure. The fear of stepping into something new and not achieving it or not being good enough. And attached to that is the fear of what others will think if / when I don’t succeed in what I set out to do.

Well, I’m here today to speak some T R U T H into these lies that Fear tells us.

I’ve been faced with a lot of big decisions recently, and as I’ve wrestled with them all, the question I keep asking myself, and prompting others with, is

Who do I choose to listen to? Fear or Faith?

So many of us are afraid of making a change or stepping into something new in fear that it won’t provide like our current circumstance does. Maybe you feel secure, but unhappy – do we risk security in exchange for a bit more joy in our day to day? Maybe you feel happy, but like there is a bigger dream tugging at you that you want to pursue – do you let the fear of what others will say when you make a change determine if you try or not? Will you let the fear of failing as you pursue your dream hold you back from trying at all?

Well friends, this is where the voice of Faith comes in.

For me, faith means I believe that God is going to provide. Period. No questions asked, no standards met, He is going to provide because He loves me just as I am. I’ve seen Him provide in my life over and over again, and I must reflect and remember those times when I begin to doubt and listen to Fear. Not only that, but He provides countless times in the Bible when people were living in loads of fear. Remember when Jesus calmed the storm?

As he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves – but Jesus kept sleeping. So the disciples came and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die!” He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

Matthew 8:23-26

In this story, the disciples let fear control their thoughts, instead of believing, in Faith, that Jesus was their protector and would provide for them. When storms come in our own lives, it is so easy to let Fear have the final say, and it takes much courage to listen to Faith that tells us God will provide in the uncertainty, He will provide in our fear.

That faith in God’s provision is my grounding, but then right above it, is my faith in MYSELF. We must believe that we are more than capable of pursuing our dreams, of going after new and big things. Each of us was created with our own unique giftings that serve the world in a special way – it is good to feel proud of those gifts we bring and gain confidence as we develop our strengths even more. My hope is that you would search for that strength and truth within yourself to always have faith that you are abundantly loved and capable of more.

Fear can speak loudly at times, but Faith is always there to counter it with truth.

Fear tells me I’ll fail at new things, Faith says try, you might surprise yourself.

Fear tells me I won’t have enough, Faith says trust that God will provide.

Fear tells me I need to stay, Faith says go.

Fear whispers, You can’t do this, Faith yells, Anything is possible!

Who are you going to listen to today?

Fear or Faith?
